The Airline Value Proposition

In 100+ years aviation has changed, the way we travel the globe. Even the impact airports and airlines have on the economies can no longer be neglected. What makes aviation an very interesting and exciting industry. What value is there for the costumers, as since the 1920s we still travel by air, there is no equal on speed, distance and proximity to your final destination. Did aviation flourish because there were no alternatives, or is there real value for the people, companies using this transport option?

I agree that the Zeitgeist determined a lot and still does, who would have imagined students hopping around Europe for less than €300,- and visiting six cities, without having above average salaries.

10 types of queueing passengers

One thing no one told me when growing up, was that waiting in line is the most terrible experience ever, although today you have your app-addictions what keeps you on your feet. When you travel alone and waiting in the queue for the check-in desk or waiting to board the airplane, you are always looking around to see what other people are also flying with you. Can you strike a conversation? Do you even want to? Or evaluating who not to sit next to on the airplane?

Let’s us assume that you want to make your flight as pleasant as possible and want to have control over who sits next to you. How can you make the connection? It’s hard to make a connection when you are travelling alone. I think the trick is to look for similarities and try to make someone experience your state at the moment, that you probably share because you are standing in the same queue.

I like to look around and see what other people are going through the same waiting-ache as I am, I realised that there are about 10 types of queueing passengers waiting in line.

Maintening the paper airplane

In most MROs the Aircraft Maintenance Technician is working on the aircraft for about 70 - 80% of their time, which means that the rest is wasted by searching maintenance information, parts and tools. Getting the right maintenance information seems straight forward, but in a lot of cases their are different systems or methods for gathering the needed information. I myself had the same issues and from former colleagues I heard that nothing significantly changed since 2000 when I worked for a major MRO. The Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) must have access to correct and up-to-date service information.

Every airplane owner being an operator of an airline or private owner, has to maintain their airplanes to keep the airworthiness status. This also means  maintaining an AMP (Aircraft Maintenance Plan) with all the necessary information needed to perform the actual maintenance tasks.

Delta Airlines to produce kerosine itself: success or disaster?

Delta Airlines to produce kerosine itself: success or disaster?

The Atlanta-based airline Delta Airlines recently acquired its own oil refinery situated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA) and is to be run by wholly-owned subsidiary Monroe Energy LLC. It is Delta’s goal to gain more control in the current kerosine market. Latest rumors even say that Delta is planning to sell its fresh brewed kerosine to other airlines.

As we all know, jet fuel prices are rising (graphs 1 and 2) due to several factors, like unstable political matters, high demands and so on. It is therefore not strange that airlines like Delta are thinking out-of-the-box and come up with ideas.

I wonder why an airline is so desperate to produce its own fuel. One needs the knowledge to run such a business, meet the safety regulations and so forth. Also, it is said that the acquisition sum of $150 million for the refinery is so low because the complex is deteriorating. Delta doesn’t know what it’s doing... Or does it?

Feasibility of Bio-Based Airline Fuel

Fact: Worldwide 34 billion kg carbon emissions are generated in one year, with the aviation industry only being responsible for approximately two percent of this amount.

Although the aviation industry produces less carbon emissions compared to the other sectors, the industry is trying to be more sustainable. In addition, a depletion of fossil fuel causes an increase in its value, while there is a supply uncertainty. One of the solutions for these difficulties can be operating with sustainable biofuel (Figure: Lifecycle emissions from biofuels). Keep in mind when discussing sustainable biofuel, I really mean sustainable biofuel, which is made from microalgae. Cooking oil is absolutely excluded from being sustainable, in my opinion.
